2005 T5 shuddering and turning off while driving

    Hi,

I'm on a road trip and about 400km into the trip my auto TDI van started a slight shudder upon exceleration. It got a bit worse as we went on until it just stopped at 100km an hour. We pulled over and it restarted. So we kept driving. 15+ shutdowns and restarts later we made our destination. Now we need to get it fixed before heading home. There are no warning lights or anything else obvious.

Has anyone had this problem or know what it might be?

    Cheers

When you say it stops does the van seem like the engine is revving with no drive or is it just cutting out and needs to be restarted to get it going again . Now if its revving then it sounds like the problem we had with our T5 the auto would shudder under acceleration but it took ages for the problem to get fatal . At the end it would drive away and then start revving with no drive turning it off and then on would get it going again . Let us know as I can then explain what it may be if its like ours .

It's hard to tell without scaning it. But, it could also be the engine ECU.

When it turns off it just dies, revs go down it splutters and then off, the auto goes into neutral and I have to roll to the side. I then try and start it and on the second long try I pump the sh*t out of the accelerator and it fires up. It will turn off again around 10-30mins.

Okay then its not the sort of problem we had as yours has some sort of engine electronics problem , as Transporter says you need someone to scan the van for a proper diagnosis .

Anyone else had this before? I can't scan it as its a public holiday. I'm on my return trip home 500km away and I'm doing 80kmh not going over 2k rpm. It's stopped about 7 times in 400km so far. Not fun at all!

Well you could do a John Cleese on it and get out and beat it with a tree branch , see Fawlty Towers .Basil Fawlty beats his car - Fawlty Towers - BBC - YouTube
