2005 Multivan 3.2 Auto Check Engine Light and Error Codes

Buying an old 2005 Multivan in the 3.2 V6 Auto. VIN WV2ZZZ7HZ6H009501
307,000k's. Reasonably comprehensive history with recorded regular servicing/oil changes

First drive all went well. Then started it up and a brief hiccup/miss from the engine on start up and the Check Engine Lamp illuminated. Didn't extinguish in subsequent starts.

Plugged in OBD scanner, error codes as follows
    1. P2187 (0x2187)
System too lean at idle, bank 1.

    2. P0014 (0x0014)
Camshaft position (CMP) actuator, exhaust/right/rear, bank 1 - timing over advanced/system performance.

All other control units, etc. no faults found. Not too bad for an old girl.

Does this error code suggest possibly a disaster waiting in the wings?
Current owner has driven the car like this ( with this intermittent fault ) for past 2 years and 30,000k's.

Auto transmission generally performs well, from a downhill coast to an uphill throttle application sometimes there's a monor clunk. All shifts are smooth, once or twice during a workout around town when changing to 4th gear it didn't immediately lock up. Perhaps a fluid and filter change required. No DTC faults recorded in TCU.
Couldn't find a definitive transmission fluid or transmission manufacturer/type anywhere.
Is it an Aisin Warner 6 speed with the "sealed for life" which isn't?

It's an old bus which I'd like to save if it's practical and do a longish (3,000k) trip in a couple of months.
Don't mind spending a few $ where necessary to keep things working.
There's other minor ag related issues which I can deal with.

    Look forward to advice. Thanks

wow, a 3.2!! Think theyre pretty rare.
    Should do 200kmh flatout

Checked the plug in no. 1 ? Plug gap?
    Might be wrong type/heat range.
    See what its burning like.
    Replace it?

You're lucky, to get 300K out of an auto without a fluid change, if what you say is correct.
Mine only got to 160K. Fully rebuilt.
The trans is an Aisin/Warner 09K.
    You gearbox code is HGC
If you need paint, your paint code is R902

I think what youre talking about with 4th is flaring. The drive clutch slips momentarily before it locks up.
Once or twice is prob ok, but if its all the time i'd worry. Eventually it will burn/glaze the fibre plates.
Mine used to do it now and again b4 the rebuild. I think it was 3rd or 4th gear too.
I did my own partial oil changes as well.On a DIY oil change you will only get about half the oil out. 4L or so.
How to change T5 Auto Gearbox Oil - The Brick-yard - Page 1

At the time i used Penrite DX-VI for compatibilty G055 025 i think. No longer available, Penrite recommend ATF-FS but i dont think it has
G055 025. I'm using this after the rebuild.

You could try an oil change. Make sure you do the internal filter too. VW sell them, even though the gearbox is "sealed for life".Funny that!!
The sump gasket is reuseable if you dont damage it.
You could instead get a gearbox place to do a full flush. This gets all the fluid out. Uses maybe 10-12L. Make sure they or you change the filter after. Most shops won't.

If you want to stave off gearbox probs, and keep the van, i would strongly recommend an air/oil trans cooler, and get rid of the coolant/oil cooler.
With a coolant /oil cooler your trans oil runs at best, at the coolant temp of around 90C. This hardens seals and o-rings over time. Not good.
    Good luck.

The current and previous owners (5 years of ownership) both had the check engine light on for long periods before resetting with no ill effect.
The light is currently off, though expect it to return to on at some point soon?

Thanks Steve for the advice on the tranny and changing fluid. The flaring in 4th is not all the time as far as I can tell. Your link and fluid change procedure is appreciated.

Well, as nicely as it drove, apart from the mentioned issues, the two businesses who have/do service my VW's said to leave it and buy something other than the Multivan. Bummer.
