2003 Caravelle diesel tdi. Help. How do I replace a faulty temp sensor

Can someone please tell me where the temp sensor is located on the engine. It needs replacing as the temp gauge in the dash is not working. It works intermittently and Sometimes comes on goes up to 90 degrees then drops back down to zero. I have ordered the part from vw. Part no 251919501a $68.45. Has two pins on it. Received part but I can't find where it goes on the engine. Can someone please post a photo of where it goes or a detailed description of where it fits. I just can't work it out. There's no vw mechanic locally.

They're (there's two) in the outlet housing on the front side of the cylinder head, next to the alternator.

You can get at them two ways, either put the front end into the service postion to get at it from the top, or pull the belly pan off and attempt it from undernieth.

Your sensor will be either #7 or #8, and are shown next to the housing they live in.

    I'm not sure.

They're colour-coded, and the electrical connectors are not interchangeable, so it'll be a simple process of elimination.

Had a horrible day dealing with Volkswagen on the phone. Part #7 or #8 above is not the part 251919501 that I ordered. They will not tell me if its part 7 or 8 that I need and say that I need to bring the car in. Well I have already brought the car into Volkswagen - paid $75 for a diagnosis and that is how I come to order the above part no 251919501. Vin for my Caravelle is wv2zzz70z3h103750c. Can anybody please tell me what part no to order to fix the above problem . Volkswagen not friendly
