    1999 Caravelle opinions?

Hi all, a friend of mine over there is interested in the above, and has asked if there's anything to look out for on these … I have no experience with them, but am i right in thinking the Auto is a bit unreliable and the 2.5l petrol is a bit gutless and thirsty?
Any opinions/experience would be much appreciated!

We had the same model brand new in 2000 not Caravelle but a Transporter , things I remember the auto was more reliable than the subsequent disaster that VW unleased the Tiptronic . The 2.5 was a pretty good performer okay being petrol it will not match the diesels in fuel economy but it was gutsy reliable donk . Others will probably give more tech stuff but over the 4 years the only thing that cost was new brake disc's and rotors other than that no other expenses . Now being this van is on the Gold Coast in Queensland [my neck of the woods ] I would advise your friend have a good look for rust as the Gold Coast is a very salt air environment with wind carrying the salt spray into the air regular washing is essential to prevent salt build up main area is around the front windscreen and lower sills

As above, rust, auto transmission condition, and service history. If the box hasn't been serviced, but still seems ok (smooth shifts, no flaring), make it number 1 priority to have the oil and filter changed in it. Also consider doing the timing belt.

    Otherwise, they're an ok thing.
