    1997 T4 2.5 petrol coolant part question .

Hi all the son's away and I finally get the chance to do some maintenance , my question there is a coolant leak its from a fitting on the front of the head between the first and second spark plug or vise versa it has a plug top and bottom and the hose comes straight out the front and continues across to the radiator , the coolant appears to be coming out of the plug on the bottom . the photo is the best I could get as it was a tight fit for the damn camera to fit into . You can see the plug leads and the hose the bottom plug has the green coolant on it nothing seems to be coming from above that point .Thanks guys

Looks like the coolant flange from the picture, but really hard to tell because the picture isnt quite descriptive, take it to a local VW dealer and get them to identify the part for you mate?

Thanks for the info but after the trouble I had with the local VDub crowd they won't be geting any more of my hard earned shekals . I suspect that it might be where the thermostat is but not sure why there would be two plugs attached . There is no hurry as the sons away for awhile . But on the up side I was able to replace the instrument cluster lights with some red LED's fixed the alarm security LED as well and also found broken and chewed out rear engine gearbox mount replacement on the way , and also sorted out problem with cruise control .

It could be the O ring around the sensor or the plastic housing itself. I have the same problem with our Polo at present. Only a small leak but I need to deal with it. I bought a new O ring & inspected the bore for any cracks[can't see any] but with the new O ring fitted to the sensor it doesn't seem to have the correct fit. I fitted it with silicone grease but it still leaks. My guess is the plastic has enlarged with time. Unfortunately the new part is $191 that only comes with a new thermostat, temp sensor etc.
Understand how it works, troubleshoot logically BEFORE replacing parts.

Thanks jets what you say makes sense , the green coolant is only present around the lower plug there does not appear to be any above that point so I might investigate alittle more .

My T4 has that problem, leaky heater tap. That's what the mechanics know it as. It's a $100 to repair, apparently takes about 15-20 mins to do. I'm going in for mine next week, the mechanic didn't have the same heater tap, he had a newer revision which was different.
