After completing a three day break from Adelaide to Mt Gambier via the Coorong & return on the main h/way I am amazed by my low fuel consumption. No special preparations apart from checking the tyre pressures & I know the air cleaner is good. The main reason for the low fuel use is not setting any targets on where we wanted to stay each night & driving in relaxed "holiday mode". We drove around 100km/hr on the way down combined with lots of low geared exploring around the various towns & beaches. The return trip on Wednesday was a stinker, 36degrees & driving against a hot strong north wind with the a/c on flat out.On this leg of the journey I sat on between 90 to 100.
Now I know it isn't always practical to travel at lower speeds, but if you can it makes a big difference, even just reducing by 10km/hr.

well done, thats fantastic!
i should really see how good i can get my fuel consumption - i spend all my time on the F3 raceway, where the speed limit is rarely adhered to, and people are asleep - still i get between 5.8-6.2l/100km. it must be a lot better at lower speeds.

Yes diesel. When I picked up the van I was slightly disappointed with the consumption[see earlier thread] I had assumed wrongly that the tyre pressures would be ok. I also sat on 110km/hr most of the way & both of these contributed to the heavy consumption. I am amazed at what a difference taking it easy makes.

Well done Jets...never got within a bulls roar of 1000km on a tank of diesel in mine (T4 syncro DOKA).
Around town I can easily do 8.5 L/100km (good bu not enough to do 1000km) but the DOKA shape and the syncro gearing conspire to blow out consumption to 10 to 12 L/100km....worse if the wind is up.
Of course, travelling at 90km/h is the most efficient speed for a T4 but not that practical when you are at least 2 hours from anywhere once you leave town...
I regularly got around 1000km from a tank driving at 110 to 120 in the country with 8 people in the car and the A/C on in my old T4. It was a manual front wheel drive TDI van with windows, plywood floor and rubber mat and seats added, so it was much lighter than the dedicated people movers like the Multivan I now have. Even in the city I got over 900km on a tank.
