So we can only use genuine VW oil? Really? Surely it cant be that special that no other oil company can make a comparable oil?

I was going to use Fuchs in mine.

I like the Nulon's note there; "NOTE: This is a recommendation only, please check your manual handbook for correct lubricant"

To me it's either approved or not and I'm sure that the Nulon product is not.
Use it at your own peril.

One of the VW specifications for the 6-speed transverse Aisin (Japanese) transmission is G-055-025-A2.

To date, I haven't seen an ATF approval list from VW like there is for engine oils. (Does it even exist? Probably not.)

If your transmission needs a G-055-025-A2 spec fluid, then you can try Mobil ATF 3309.

The internet says that JWS 3309, and Toyota T-IV can be considered interchangeable, and since Aisin has been an automotive supplier to Toyota since forever, it wouldn't at all surprise me if you could use Toyota T-IV fluid (save $$$).

Remember that VAG isn't Aisin's only customer.

I'm sure if you call VW they would tell you what oil to use in AT. The transmissions and diff fluids aren't easy to check by the driver/owner, so they probably don't make such list a public affair.

I would probably stick with the well known oil company, when selecting ATF for VW car, even though it is the AISIN trany. Last time I looked at that specs oil, I was quoted $50/L in 1L bottles.

    This is what G 055 052 A2 looks like:

Now obviously, VW don't actually make the fluid themselves. It would be supplied and bought from a lubricant manufacturer.

All I'm saying is, I would try and get the fluid direct from the lubricant manufacturer, rather than pay whatever VW are charging for it. $50/L!? Bloody hell...

I'm guessing a 20L container of Mobil ATF 3309 would cost way less than that...

    Yes, good idea.
It would be wise for the OP to double-check with VW, but I reckon it'll be the same ATF as shown above.

$50 a litre whats the stuff made of liquid gold ?????????????????????????? the fluid is sourced from a lubricant manufacturer so there must be an equivalant available . Or is this just a way for VW to extract more pesos from our wallets , I do know that some car makers will come up with a design parameter for their parts etc and then they will take out a license to protect what they see as "their " product .

That's probably because it is the same (except for that "hsy" sticker).

Very good information Diesl_vert! And yes, VW quoted me $50 per Litre for the OEM ATF and said I required 8L's. $400 for oil? You gotta be kidding me! Hence the reason to use Penrite DX-VI as recommended by another T5 owner.

The next time I'm down at the shops, I'll see how much Mobil ATF 3309 is and post back .

Funnily enough, ever since I created this thread, the transmission has been much better. Not as good as new, but better than What I experienced at times. Might consider purchasing the Mobil ATF 3309 and doing a complete flush.

There was a previous version of the bottle that had a Texaco/Caltex star moulded into the lid.

And with that, I'll say no more. Mainly because I've not investigated it any further.
