08 2.5 TDI Multivan Transmission issue

The title says it all, and for some seasoned VW owners probably not surprising as I have come to discover from the amount of others with similar issues

Previous owner had the box rebuilt by a company in Sydney which included a 20,000km warranty when it was serviced by them within a timeframe... I believe this has now lapsed but I’ll be calling them tomorrow

I believe I have added about 6,000 ish kms to the car since owning it, totalling a whopping my 151,000kms (can’t do a lot of driving at the moment)

A family member actually collected the van for me when I first brought it and noted a slight thunk from 1st to 2nd, that it was more notable when it was cool and gradually went away when warm
I’ve lived with it for a bit as it’s barely done any driving since owning it and have only just now started to look into it a bit and try find somewhere here in Melbourne to get it looked at.

I called a company that has been mentioned here and in brickyard before and was told basically it’s hard to get the parts for it so can’t do any work on it all bar a service..

I am trying to gauge whether a service will mend the issue for a bit or if it will largely remain the same as to me it sounds like a solenoid issue?

Basically considering my options and weighing up the benefits of trying to mend the gearbox as I recently had a bit of work done to the motor (water pump and exhaust manifold)

Assuming its a 6 speed tiptronic box:

Try resetting it, the procedure is here: T5 FAQ and How to THREAD (up to August 2009).

When I do mine I place a white pencil eraser (10-15mm thick) between the accelerator pedal and the floor. The closer you push the pedal to the floor while you do the reset, the harder the changes will be. With the 10mm space during the reset, the changes are very smooth.

AS VW now have changed their servicing recommendations on the Tiptronic make sure who ever does the service removes the sump as there is a filter inside , if left unchanged when the new fluid is put into the box it flushes all the debris built up inside down to the bottom of the sump pan .. When you put your foot on the accelerator after stopping the internal pump sucks the fluid through the filter and if its blocked {like ours } it will destroy the box .

Initial company suggested it was just an adjustment in the valve body / solenoid and the person doing the work in Melbourne had a few try’s but looks like it’s needs a new valve body so it will be getting one in a few weeks,
Bit of a bummer seeing it was rebuilt not long ago but I guess they didn’t do that portion

I will ask about the filter being done but they have done a lot of VW’s so one would hope they know

I got my valve body reconditioned and bands adjusted, as well as a complete oil gallery flush at 300,000km by reliable automatics at Crosby Road Albion, Brisbane. They have the equipment to diagnose any faults there and the ability to correct them. It has been as good as new since it was done which is about 10,000km ago. If yours has already had the valve body reconditioned, it could be worth finding a shop that can diagnose what else may be wrong before you go down an expensive path of a complete new valve body.

I pulled the paperwork out last night and found something was done with valve body not clear whether it’s the original unit or a new/ rebuilt one.
this was 20,000kms and 2 years ago now though, I called my mechanic but it looks like they’re taking a long weekend with the cup on tomorrow so will see what they say and whether they go looking for other issues

I believe it hadn’t been done as that’s the first question my mechanic asked the recon place in Sydney, he tried to adjust a few things but the thump from 1st to 2nd was slightly apparent still

It’ll get a recon valve body so not quite as expensive as I was thinking luckily
