I got a Polaris one with a separate screen on the dash was great tried mirror one and it was too heavy and kept drooping
Hey all,
New guy here.
I have a ‘14 Highline with a RCD510 head unit. I recently put a canopy on, and I need a reverse camera with a toddler running around the place. I only trust Park Assist to a point.
I took my dash apart and found my RCD 510 is the non-mustard plug version. I have a reverse camera kit, nothing to plug it into.
My question is ; if you were me, would you buy another RCD510 with a mustard plug, Or buy a seperate reverse camera kit, like a rear view mirror or dash mount screen?
It’ll come down to price and ease of setup, and I would like to keep it looking OEM as possible
what do you guys think? Has anyone here added a reverse camera after purchase, and was it a headache ? Thanks very much in advance.

RCD510 with the RVC plug will be cheap these days, it is an old unit though. Better to go with a RCD330 that will give you Carplay/Andriod and have a RVC input.
Don't bother with a cheap separate screen. I retrofitted a RVC kit and a RNS510 almost 10 years ago now to my MY14 Amarok. Still works great but about time to upgrade to either a RCD330 or a Discover Media I think.

thanks mate. When you retrofitted the RNS510, what happened when you fired it up? did it go into the "enter passcode" screen, and if so, what did you do?
update.
I bought another RCD510 that HAS a RVC input (mustard plug) from a wreckers, and my research so far was that, upon receiving the head unit, I would need to ring up or visit a Volkswagen dealership so they could search the VIN number for the donor car, which would give them the anti theft code.
Head unit arrived, plugged it in, the "enter code" screen came up, no suprises there. But the first dealership I went to, the dude told me, "you need the second car. You need the original ECU and loom otherwise it won't work" . I call BS on that and walk out.
Rung 4 more dealerships in Perth, 3 of them had me on hold or would ring out. The one person I did get an answer from, told me " we don't search the VIN, we plug your head unit in to find the code, $198." For $198!!!!!!!
*question*
Has anybody here bought another head unit second hand, needed the anti theft code, and got it from VW? Am I stuck with having the pay $198 to get the code? Can you get the code with a VCDS?
Because I'm ready to send the head unit back, I'm not paying $200 for a security code just so I can plug in my reverse camera.
I have the software tool that can recover RNS510 codes, I can send it to you to try.
You need a computer with a serial port or a USB to TTL adaptor.
On second look, you might need an eeprom dump to get the pin on those

I'm pretty sure this was sorted using VWCODES website, I did the same on the weekend to get RCD510 unit unlocked. $20 and it worked without an issue.
I'm looking into hooking up a reverse camera also. Is it easier to use the OEM camera (needs coding) or buy an aftermarket RVC type unit? Does the aftermarket unit need coding?
