Installation Issues with a replacement head unit

Hi,

I have a 2017 Amarok with a dead Discover Media MIB 2.

I purchased a replacement unit and have been able to get everything working except the reverse camera and also
the graphic in the Park Pilot won't change to an Amarok (Currently an SUV of some sort).

I have an OBD11 and are quite familiar with working with this tool, but can't figure out how to fix these remaining two issues.

When I put the old head unit back in, the camera works (nothing else does tho), but with the replacement everything works except the camera. Just on a technical note, the original unit was a revision E and the replacement is a revision G if that makes any difference. Component protection has also been removed from the new unit.

Any help would be appreciated...

I am guessing you copied the coding across from the old unit, did you do anything with the adaptation channels?

In VCDS you can create adaptation channel maps, to save all the values, I think in OBD11 it’s called backup?

Byte 19 coding has a bit for reverse camera (bit 4). Ensure that's ticked (RVC low).
If it is, then you need to go to adaptation channels, under 'Vehicle Functions BAP' and search for 'VPS'. Set that to disabled.

For the vehicle depiction, that is controlled by the first 3 bytes of coding.
For Amarok, change it to 061807. Probably set to Tiguan which would be 021306

Example:

I was able to change the vehicle graphic to the Amarok, so thanks for that.

When I go to vehicle functions in OBD11 for the multimedia control unit, Bit 19 for RVC Low is set to disabled, but ODB11 won't allow me to change it, it keeps saying "function not available". I also checked for VPS in the BAP section and that is also set for disabled. Not sure what to do next.

Thanks for the reply.

I couldn't back up the coding from the old unit as it is basically dead and OBD11 would fail when trying, however surprisingly the reverse camera was still working.

Do you have any other suggestions that may work ??

If no existing coding is available that’s fine, just got to change the config from the donor units, work out what’s needed, does the ODB11 have a coding helper section?

My memory is a bit hazy on the mib coding, but you may need to enter a security access code to enable adaptation changes.

Never seen RVC coding bit not allowed to be enabled.
No SA needed to change it either.
Would try with VCDS.

Darryl: Hi. Like my colleague says, I also have never had to use a security code for enabling the Byte19, Bit4 software switch!! That said, I'm always suspicious about hacked MIB units (it's anyone's guess what exact firmware mods are made to defeat Component Protection).

Maybe try resetting the MIB before you plug-in the OBD11 dongle and connect to the software!! If you are not aware of the reset procedure, turn-ON the MIB, then press AND HOLD-DOWN the ON/OFF switch until the MIB turns-OFF and ON again.

PS: For reference, the "normal" security code for the MIB is the ubiquitous 20103!!

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for your replies and assistance.

I was looking at the OBD11 FAQ section and found an obscure reference in an answer to someone else's question about some other issue of the need to change a parameter in some modules to allow them to accept long coding changes. I changed the parameter on the media unit module to "end of production line" rather than "OBDC" as that was the only available change that the module would accept. Once I had done that, the enable RVC low change command to "enabled" completed with "success", where before it would error out with "function not available". The reverse camera now works perfectly.

It should not have been this hard, have VAG software engineers not heard of plug and play ? The new head unit should have detected the presence of the factory reverse camera and enabled it itself. If it was aftermarket, then I can see why the coding needed to be done, but factory installed options should just work.

I have been in the IT industry for years, so editing strings and such is no problem, but it shouldn't really be needed anymore.
