    EGR and Gearbox Removal

Hi. Does the EGR unit need to be removed when removing the gearbox in a 2011 Amarok?

My crankshaft position sensor failed and when the mechanic tried to remove it he stripped the bolt . To be able to get the bolt out and replace the sensor the only option was to remove the gearbox . I managed to successfully argue that this wasn't my fault and wasn't charged for the extra labour however when I received my car back the clutch wasn't bled properly (so it was very sticky) and within a week or so I started hearing a bad hissing noise. Turns out the EGR was only hanging on by one bolt so when it was under load it twisted - just enough to crack the exhaust pipes near the engine . Now they are saying it will cost $2500 to repair the cracked EGR cooler and replace the pipes. And so, back to my original question, does anyone know if the EGR unit has to be removed when removing the gearbox to get the the crankshaft position sensor?? In other words - is this their fault or just an amazing coincidence?

Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is really driving me nuts.
