you know you're driving a mk 1 on a roadtrip when you take more tools and spares than clothes!

When you have to hold the vent window in place with packing tape cos it's come unglued from all the things that hold it in place, despite repeatedly gluing it up with fancy glue...
When the boot lid gently closes on your head when getting stuff out of the boot.
When the boot lock becomes difficult in the cold and damp so you can't shut the hatch when you just want to get home.
When the clutch cable wears clean through the retaining eyelet on the gear box resulting in no clutch action. Solution - cable ties

You know you drive a mk1 when your alternator gives up the ghost 30kms out of melbourne on a 2000km round trip to the VW Nats.
Sorry Jarred Had to
WHAT! damn dude, i guess apart from that it was a top effort!

you have to take the dash out and its a only matter of 6 screws and as many plugs.
You get back into it and think that it is easier and more enjoyable to drive than the MKV. I love that feeling a MK1 gives back to you when you love it unconditionally, faults and all.
