Does anyone have a fix for the slow wiper speed? I don't remember them being so slow back when the cars were new, so wondering whether its dry bushes or similar in the motor or linkages.

Thanks for that, sounds like a Mk3 motor is the way to go. I'll give it a go and let you know the results.
You could always get the motor beefed up by getting it re-wound. I got it done at a place up here in QLD, not sure of the cost my brother used to do CNC work there so it was free!

The Mk3 or SEAT motors work well.
They use the same spindle size and bolt pattern so they fit exactly onto your Mk1 mechanism.
You may need a couple of inches of wire and the connector plug from the donor car too
There is a thread on here somewhere about repairing a track on the back of the fusebox which makes things like the wipers work properly on a Mk1 too. They are terrible fuseboxes.
