windscreen wiper motor
Hi again guys,
new issue with my mk1 diesel, i had been storing many things on the convenient parcel shelf above the engine bay, jumper cables, spare parts, 5L of rimula x and some old boxer shorts to wipe off the dipstick....unfortunately, i had no idea just how the wiper linkage system and motor works. in short, the boxer shorts became entangled in the wiper motor and linkages and killed it..... i managed to get the motor off and pull it apart and inside is a plastic cog which is all cracked up around the seat that connects it to a small shaft that in turn is connected to the linkages.
i imagine that not many of you would be quite so silly as to do this and may have wrecks with wiper motors that are not required.... if anyone has a spare one, please let me know your price with postage to area code 7052, tasmania along with your bank account details and i will credit your account via netbank.
as you can imagine, tassie isnt the sunniest place in the world and its required asap... beware however, you need a 10mm spanner to get it off and due to its location, its a right b1tch to undo....once you get the incredibly cheap and nasty black plastic cover aside....
also, i know there is a parts wanted page but i thought it might be quicker to post here and by way of circumventing the rules i have added some pics of my new ride.... no rare swallow tail or paintjob, just a very basic mk1 diesel. i thought i had paid too much by paying $750 for it, but given what i have seen advertised on ebay recently, i think i got a bargain.... reco head on it too....

I've heard that you can upgrade to a mk 3 wiper motor pretty easily. there was a thread about it somewhere.

there it is. I think someone on here has had a crack at it too. you may as well up grade the whole motor, to a faster and younger motor, rather than repairing the old one, for what it'll cost ya.
oh and don't put stuff in the rain tray....
that's what the boot is for!

many thanks to you, jarred. i believe i may just attempt this..... will call and get a quote from the dub dealer on one tomorrow...

thanks to all who replied, decided to go with jarred's suggestion and have a mk3 motor coming soon thanks to golf loon's cave of vw treasure.....

Mk 3 wiper motor
I did this changeover at the weekend. Its a bit different to the instructions on the link however.
The main difference is that the Mk3 motor I got has a plastic backing plate, so the backing plates cannot be swapped as in the article. Its even simpler though, just use the Mk3 motor as is. You might need to make a little bracket to support the motor, as the Mk3 motor doesn't have one, otherwise it would bounce around a bit I reckon. Wiring is easy as long as you have a bit of the Mk3 wiring. The wire colours match the Mk 1 loom perfectly.
Speed is better, about 2 seconds a sweep on low speed with the lights on, compared to about 5 before. That might improve if I lube the balljoints, but it seems OK to me, though not as fast as the new Toyota I was following this morning.
