i'm guessing you've checked the lines for holes.

wire up the pump straight to the battery, to test it's working, that eliminate the pump being faulty, then you'll probably have to start testing the switch etc

    hey mate,

you need to go to supercheap or dcik smith and buy yourself a multimeter.

come back when you have one.

if you already have one, check the voltage between the supply wire and ground wire for the pump while someone holds the switch in the on position for you inside the car... then check fuses, continuity between different points in the wire (check for breakages).

could be a zillion things mate.

    Hey mate,

Got a multimeter and there is definitely power to the pump. I can only assume it would be the fuse...any idea which one sorts out the washer pump??!

if you have power there, then the fuse is OK (power goes throught the fuse first (thats what the fuse is for).

that means you must have an earth problem. try replacing the earth wire for the pump

As Jarred said, test the new pump first. If power line is ok then test the ground wire. There aren't too many combination here.

My Mk1 windscreen washer doesn't work either, I just can't be bother

I've got the same problem, intermittend washer & wiper not working, there is a reley on the fusebox for this. I've ordered a new one at Barlow's (cost $92.00). Hope that will fix it. Run the pump strait from the battery, ok, with the pump diconnected, intermittend wiper works, with pump connected both dead. With pump diconnected, voltage at pump cable 11.8.

Mate had the steering wheel off my cabrio over the weekend (a bitch to drive, but fun nonetheless), and found my washer wasn't always working, issue here was the little copper tab that engages or closes the circuit was out of kilter. I bent it ever so slightly (about 1mm) and hey presto washer works a treat. Wish I had taken a snapshot!
