My gf had the same sound coming from the back of her honda accord.

It was the wheel bearing, it also didnt help that the tyres where at 56psi

If the bolts where loose it would be more of a BANG BANG BANG sound as the wheel slaps the hub.....i learnt that the hard way in Lesson1: Tighten your wheel bolts. And in Lesson2: i learnt what it feels like to drive a car with 3 bolts missing and the remaining bolt about to come out, like driving on sqaure wheels.

Ok so driving home tonight, sounds more like a knocking than a whomping, bolts are fine, tyres are very old but still have tread.

Check the bolt that holds the drive shaft on to the hub, the one right in the middle. Do mk1's have that? I know that made a knocking noise on my mk2 when it was loose.

The nuts on mine are 30mm (cost me £7 for the socket!)
If it's knocking I'm 95% sure it's the CV joint (speaking from experience ). You'll also need spline tool to get the drive shaft off n all, took me 2 - 3 hours to do on the drive.

This happened to me as well, ripped the front caliper off!
I pulled the hand brake on and luckily slid into a parking spot!
    (more ass than class)

Good test for the wheel bearing is to jack it up, grab the wheel (one hand on each side) and try and wobble it. A good bearing shouldn't move..
