Not too sure, but if you got the rubber mounts and 'u straps', would it be possible to mount the 'later' steering rack?

There's not much available for the early racks unfortunately.
They're far more common here than in other countries and we only had them for 1 or 2 years.

I'd be looking into if you could
    1. Swap the innards of the new rack into the old housing or
    2. Cut the brackets off the old one and weld them onto the new one.

otherwise you'll have to track down a second hand one.

    Early style rack

    New style rack

Hmmm looking at the pics my idea about welding the brackets on isn't going to work. Might work for the passenger side. Driver side you'd have to weld the later bracket onto the firewall.

    Thanks for reply..

So later one will work fine? Just

Need to work on mounts than?
Or is it easy to replace only the inside parts keeping the housing?

Im not sure if my mechanic could do the job fine..

And i need to get the mounts and u bracket right?

Later rack the spacing between the pairs of bolts is different, how do I know ? Anton and I are modding his 76 to take the later 4 bolt steering rack. This will leave is old rack available for purchase ( direct fit for your 76 ) if you so desire.

Other technical point to note is to install the rack mount correctly you really need to open up part of the bottom of the RHS front axle frame as the mount is sandwiched between this plate and the floor plate.
    Lots of MK 1 Scirocco's...

If it aint a MK 1 then it must be a donor car ??

    Cheers,

could you tell me why you guys are modding to fit later one?
    any advantages?

what about keeping the housing then?

Im in korea.. and my golf is only one existing here,

really hard to get parts and repair..

    so sad

That would explain why you bought a left hand drive rack.

As far as I can tell, the correct steering rack should be 171 419 061 B.
