The 1.6 GTI engine has the combustion area in the pistons and the head is completely flat so you can't fit a GTI head on a normal 1.6 engine. They were loved by the old Formula 2 racers because you could get 170hp out of them without exceeding the 1.6 engine limit for the class.

A okay makes sence! Are the valves the same size? Are the ports/flow numbers the same for both heads?
Obviously the gti would have a higher CR?

How would one increase the compression in a standard 1.6? Skim the head i suppose, can you swap the pistons for others with less dish?

The 1.6 GTI engine is mega rare in Oz. The parts aren't interchangeable with a standard 1.6.

Standard 1.6 has flat topped pistons so you'd need to skim the head to get higher compression.

I suggest for now, get your 1.6 running and rego'd, throw on the webber, decent exhaust and maybe a cam. When you've got some money saved get a 2.0 from a MK3, cam it, new exhaust and twin carbies, maybe some head work. Done right you should see 140 to 150 hp. The 2.0 takes the same gearboxes as the 1.6 so you shouldn't have any problems replacing the 1.6.

    Cheers
