When did my car leave the factory?

Just had a random thought, seeing as the squirrelmobile is going to be celebrating her 30th birthday next year.

Do Volkswagen hold records going that far back, and would they consider sharing the information with me if I provide the VIN number?

Thinking about it, it's a bit of a silly question but it'd be nice to know on what day my Mk1 rolled out of the door at Wolfsburg, and i'm sure i'm not the only one who has had this pop into their head.

The VIN plate (or chassis/ID plate?) on the top of the front core support will have the month it was made.

    Yes. SEE HERE.

According to Volkswagen, my GTI left the factory on 11 March 1980.

Follow this link to source the certificate: VW Certificate Generator

It took about 6-7 weeks for my certificate to show up.
