Does the noise dissapear when you go round a corner putting the weight onto the wheel in question ? If so i'd say the bearing has had it, but when bearings go its more like a whiring noise in a straight line.
i have sorted most of the little gremlins out now, with only 1 major one left. the car makes a squeeking noise as it rolls coming from the front drivers side wheel/hub. i jacked it up and the is a fair bit of play if you rock the wheel from side to side. this is my first FWD car so im new to cv's initially i thought wheel bearing as i recognised the squeek but im not 100% sure. there is no vibration through the sterring wheel and the squeeking stops most times when turning. its worst going in a straight line. i have tried tightening the hub nut but it didnt do anything.
any ideas?
cheers
john

Wheel bearings gives a droan or a hum and gets worse when you load up the wheel in question. Squeeks can also happen in the straight line if there is play. You mention you have play at the hub in question. First check the tension of the hub nut mate if you have just done CVs. If this is at least 190NM then the bearing is tata
Cheers and good luck

replaced the bearing today. noise is still there. play is also still there!!!!!!!!!!!
what a waste of time and money. how much do cv's go for? joys of owning a mk1.
Cv joints wont cause play in the wheel.
If the hubnut has ever been loose then the centre hub piece wears badly very quickly. This will cause play in the bearing and noise.
Good luck mate,

Mate have you checked your ball joints?????? To check if you have play from a wheel bearing the best way is to check it jacked up and see if the play is there- Ok then have someone press the brake and if the play goes away its the bearing no question and if the play is still there it totallyt rules out the bearing.
