What is this thing on my alternator?

    G'day,

I recently had to replace my alternator as the old one wasn't charging. Matt at Camden GTI hooked me up with a direct replacement which has been working fine, but last night while adjusting the belt tension I noticed that this bit (shown below) is loose and dangling in the air.

The little bracket has broken off from the black plastic part so it's no longer screwed to the side of the alternator. What's it's function? Can it be replaced?

    Thanks!

Its probably a noise supressor to prevent feedback through your stereo. If it still sounds the same you probably dont need it.
