So the consensus is about $5-$10 K depending on cond. Which fits in with my guess of about $6K for a ratty one.

Good luck finding one though. Are there many replicas around?

By that I mean MK1 Aussie 2drs with GTI mechanicals/bodykit. They should be easier to find.

Lots of GTI replicas around and much cheaper than an original.

Mine cost me $1000 with lots of rust but has 1.8, 5 speed, 15's, GTI brakes etc. Needs a full rebuild but the basics are there and I'm in no rush.

It's this one from Sydney. I've had it since Easter.

LOL, most of them have lots of rust, and leak as well.

What I basically meant by replica is ones with the GTI fuel injection. Everything else is a piece of cake.

I read the article and have to say for Top Gear it was pretty reasonable.

Ahh yes, but there's also GTI engine and other Injected lower performance engines. The trick is to know what model engine you need for the better performing engine !! Just because it has factory injection doesnt mean it has GTI performance.
