    20 valve turbo.

If you have the right amount of money there is one going at the moment. A fella had someone T bone his Ibiza and he is parting the car out. He has everything you could want to fit it in a MK1 except the engine mounts..

A cheaper but still pretty quick option would be a 16V in either 1800 KR, 2 litre 9A or 2 litre ABF

Not too much work: ...20vT?! Any EFI conversion is a lot of work and money in a Mk1, but the majority of 20vs you'll find mean all but the front Mk1 engine mount will need to be custom made if you use a proper gearbox...

+ $10,000 to make it safe and roadworthy after the engine works.

Fit an 1800 with twin carbs and keep the tight-packed 4spd. Lose the interior, then fit a nice 4-branch manifold and 2.25" exhaust. 80-90kW if done well; power-to-weight still not great, but the close-ratio box makes it rapid through the gears, as does the tiny little flywheel

8 valves is all you need

i agree with valver, a nice 8v 1.6 or 1.8 on carbs with a good exhaust and a good cam is the best bang for your buck!

sure, a 20vt or the like would be ideal, but in a mk1 (~900kg with passengers) you dont need that much just to "scare commodores". Keep it cheap and simple and you'll be suprised how fast you can get up and go.

    cheers

You can put a late model 1800 into a MK I for $500 in a weekend.

I know, I've just done it!

Quieter and buckets of torque. I'm running a progressive weber and it goes very well. SHould be more than enough to scare Commodores. They will beat you but they have to put some effort into it!

There's a 1996 SEAT Cordoba 1800 motor for sale in the parts section for $500 from a very reputable seller. Me!

It is the way to go when on a budget and when you're working with limited resources. Ultimately, carbs are crap, but EFI swaps into local Mk1s aren't easy, or cheap, and you need a lot of parts

You should be able to source one, tidy it up, get some good twin 40s or 45s (rebuilt to the right specs if necessary) and manifolds (inlet and 4 branch exhaust), plus install it ghetto style for under $2000 all up. You'll need 2nd hand parts to do it for this price, though. Pretty easy to find in the right places
