I put on new rear discs and pads, front and rear wheel bearings and a set of new top shock mounts.
What a job doing the front wheel bearings... first time I've done them on my Golf! I followed Peter Jones' method here. All done, just wheel alignment to get sorted!

    Glad to be of service!

My white MK1 developed a loose exhaust system yesterday. I think I need to set up an extra hanger.

Suspect that root cause has something to do with having two wheels in the air at 110 km/h

Did some work on the 16v this weekend. Car is finally back together again - thank you long weekend! Put the newly ceramic coated dump-pipe on. It looks ridiculously flash with the shiny ceramic coating but the main reason was to cut down on heat in the engine bay, and to make the pipe last longer as well. I suspect it will lose its shine after the first track day.

Also made up a basic baffle to go over cylinder #1 inlet cam lobe, the one that throws oil straight at the oil filler cap. I have the built in oil-cap/breather set up so under prolonged high revs it ends up throwing a fair bit of oil into the catch can, even though the breather itself is baffled. This should stop a lot of that, the edges are turned down so when you fill with oil it just spills off the sides.

Now I have to set up a fuel surge tank - has anyone set one up in a mk1?

Nice little ebay under-car surge tank fitted today, was too busy to get pics. Bought a carby facet pump to supply the surge tank, and the facet pump flows the exact amount of fuel as the bosch high pressure pump (but at a fraction of the pressure) - 130l/hr - so it worked out perfectly. You can just see the alloy surge tank from behind the car if you get down low, kind of like a really miniature SLR5000 drop tank Another thing ticked off the list sitting on the dash...

Fixed the fuel line we broke the other week (had to get Enzed to re-make the banjo fitting as it was 90 degrees round the wrong way, my bad for not taking the fuel pump down as well) and connected it all up. Airlock had to be removed before we got any pressure happening, but considering the car hasn't run properly for a few years, it doesn't sound too bad.

Took it for a spin round the block after getting a UVP from VicRoads, went via the local servo where in my excitement I looked at the litres gauge not the dollar value and didn't have enough money on me. Put about 10-15kms on just driving round the locale, definitely got my money's worth from the permit, and another 26 days in which I can 'test' any work I get done.

So, one step nearer another Mk1 GTi being back on the road full-time. Reading through the roadworthiness requirements, i'm thinking there's probably a couple more things to do before I go for it (and probably find out there's quite a lot that actually needs doing), but overall much WIN from the weekend, and i've still got a big silly grin plastered across my face and can't shut up about the car.
