before xmas:
swapped in early GTI mechanical camshaft to standard 1600.
had xmas
then...
tried to do a WAY WAAAY bush camping trip with the LOW LOOOOW LS, and ended up with
> ripped off rear exhaust and bent underneath rear axle
> dented and cracked fuel tank
> dented sump
> bent 3mm wall thickness tube lower stress bar up and into gearbox. popped off linkage
> tore small chunk of alloy of base of bell housing
> mate crashed into the back of me after i stopped whilst avoiding sliding off the side of a muddy hill in the middle of nowhere, when he couldnt stop in time (4 wheel lockup). dented hatch, smashed RHS tailight and dented rear apron. small damage to bumper.
so, in order to fix:
> patched fuel tank with fuel tank repair putty/epoxy
> grafted old standard mk1 exhaust rear section to existing GTI headers/extractors.
> removed bent lower stress bar. car still drives great!
> bashed out panel damage and masked/sprayed over cracked paint with "wheel silver" spraypaint to keep out the moisture
> replaced taillight assy with second handie (good as new)
big adventure in bush with mk1! bruised, battered, and my relationship with my mk1 is now even stronger
