You have to start a thread about the car. So many people know it from previous owners and can tell you what you need to check out.

Have to agree, they are the best to teach you about mechanical issues because they are usually easy to fix (and you'll get a lot of things to fix).

    Cheers

I have officially diagnosed and repaired my first actual issue with a car, other than flat tyres or dud spark plugs

A spark plug came loose, threw the distributor WAY out of alignment and would die while idleing and would run very rough. After replacing all of the spark plugs, killing the battery and replacing that too, replacing the distributor points and adjusting it for the 50th time.. I found that the entire distributor body was about 1inch advanced -.- I put the motor into TDC, threw a screwdriver down cyl1 to confirm, spun the dizzy in to place and BOOM... Frankenstein came to life with a throaty burble.

I never thought I'd enjoy breaking down... I love my MK1!!!

P.S. VERY big thanks to everyone that provided their wealth of knowledge and especially to Paul for a) selling me an AMAZING lower front strut brace, but also b) The new dizzy points that are in MUCH better shape than the old ones (which I'll keep as backups, as you do :p).

How does a spark plug get loose and move the dizzy?

Buy a transistorised ignition system, available from any spare parts store - Repco, Supercheap, Auto One etc. They replace the points so you never have to adjust or replace them again. Bigger spark too.

    Cheers

i replaced the piece of body coloured vehicle treated timber that was holding my clutch cable in place to the firewall...

i thought the purpose pressed galvanised steel plate might be the better solution to the required fix, however i could be wrong...

I knew MK1's were "rustic" but that's going too far, even by my low standards.

i like the way they went to the trouble of profiling the cut out for the cable, top craftsmanship and wood working skills. may be metalwork classes were full that day...

There are some pics of the car from when I first joined the group. I think the heading was Mk1 rally car. Truth of the matter is that I,m having trouble working out how to attach photos. I'm better working on Golfs than bloody computers. I will get one of my daughters to organize some tomorrow, they're young and they know about these things.
