Started my pet Diesel MK1 Garden Gnome for the first time in 3 months.

Took two batteries and a couple of hours but it eventually fired.

Now everything smells like McDonalds thanks to the biodiesel the previous owner was so fond of.

Imagine having the contract on McDonalds oil? Crazy volumes must be discarded.

I have a question Pete, how do you decompress a diesel to turn it over by hand, like in a petrol removing the spark plugs - is there a way in a diesel?

Drive it 750,000km without a service, that seems to have removed all signs of any compression from my diesel.

Apart from that I'm not really sure - Pull the glow plugs out?

I generally tighten to abt a fingertip of slack.
If the belt was loose it would still charge a little + it would scream as it slipped right?

yea, you would think. I might. seems tight enough though. no screaming, and currently the alternator is actually charging [to 13.6-7V], so the alt is working, and the belt too. I think I may have an open circuit or some drain on the system somewhere.

p.s. Simon, don't forget to come to the pub meet, next monday night 7:30, same place as last time.

Go for a drive an see if the belt gets hot. But if it was slipping to the point that the alternator wasn't charging, you'd know about it i reckon.
