I had this pipe fail on mine recently, where it came off at the tank. Strangely, I too have a joiner in the hose, but it is nothing more than a joiner so it should be replaceable.
The Mk1 is leaking fuel , luckily I found the spot instantly.
This is the leaking part of fuel return hose (view under the car), I need to replace it obviously, but what is that metal connector doing ? is it from some repair works or original parts ? if it is redundant I'll just connect new hose directly from return pipe back to fuel sender.

Ah ha, got it. the joiner is there for a reason. The return pipe and fuel sender inlet pipe diameter is different, couldn't see until I pulled it out.
