His car will have hydraulic lifters....

The G-Grind has a bigger duration than the stock 1600cc cam, and has a bigger lift. It is bigger in all directions. It may not look too much bigger in some perspectives, but it will be. Also, the valves will close with no worries with the G-Grind cam as it is a factory cam. It is not too wild (wild enough), and 8V heads didnt change much at all over the years...

As for cam gears, check out mine if you want, Charles. I swear by the cam gear. We gained an extra 8bhp atw with a cam gear...
    Euro look 2... Mk2 love!

Did some checking since last post and I am sure that it's shim-city for me Peter has ofered me the "kit" for the measuring and the re-shimming which I will do once the bits are back in one piece. The cam-gear looks cool... but it might wait for engine #2 which will follow on in about 12 months. The idea is to have enough oomph to play nice with the other boys, but still hold a bit back while I learn to keep it out of the trees. THEN we break out the bigger valved head, lightened/balanced bits etc etc

Ok I think there are a few things you need to check out, shimming only takes place with the mech lifter heads not hydro's. If you have a g grind cam from an early mechanical head it wont fit due to a different base circle radius. You need to calculate and compare the base circle radius to see if that cam will work in your head, to do this measure the height the cam base sits above one of the bearing surfaces, if the 2 cams get a different measurement dont bother using the one that was never in the motor. When you are ready to do a crazy head get a mech lifter one or convert a hydro one to mechanical, hydro lifters wont suffer much larger cam lifts than stock anyway.

I'm pretty sure that he has a mech lifter head and not a hydro.

G-Grind fitted, couldn't resist dry-fitting the exhaust and webers... what do you think?

    Extractors?
Does the can rotate ok, I have had to modify the bucket etc on those early 1.6 heads when putting in bigger cams.

Extractors - would be nice to have, but maybe on engine#2**. Cam rotates just fine, haven't tried compression test to see if everysthing is closing yet...
Not going overboard on this motor, this one needs to get me going while I learn to keep it out of the trees. #2 is sitting on the trolly in the corner and will get the works

**Unless of course you happen to have a spare set lying around

    BlueRex the webbers look magnificent!

I havent seen many of those genuine trumpets, they used to be really dear, From the photo I see that the head is actually a 1.6 head, so sorry for the bumsteer about hydro heads etc. One theing you may like to consider is compression if its a 1.6 bottom end, if the compression is really low ie 8.5 :1 ish deck the block and bring it up to at least 10:1 all the webbers and cam will not do much without some compression. I also have a genuine german g grind cam here in Canberra so if you are interested to compare it to yours for verification let me know.

I'm currently building a 1.8 8V bored to 1.9 on throttle bodies with 11:1 compression and large cam and I cant wait to hear it! Go the 8V-ers

Thanks guys, the trumpets came off e-bay for not-too-huge-dollars - but they do look the part
Compression I believe (can't test yet for obvious reasons) is up, (Michael do you lurk here? Any comments???) But the real engine build effort will go into #2. All I really need is for this one to make reasonable power, LOTS of noise and get me out onto the dirt for some practice. THEN when the budget allows I will start work on engine #2. This one will get the worked head, balanced bottom-end, button clutch etc. etc. (ka-ching, ka-ching). But it will have to wait till I have paid Peter off for all the other bits first
New alternator (120 amp) arrives tonight, might be a little mig-ing and drilling required to fabricate a mount. Pics to follow.
