what is this black box in the rain try, help please

So after ages i have a free arvo, so im trying to get into the rain tray and get stuff cleaned up, but i have this black box thing here, i have no idea what it is/does and if i need it, please help, attached is an image, it has 2 black hoses which run into it, which at some stage have been cut, and a clear hose that runs to the other side of the rain tray. any clues/ideas, or maybe someone knows???
    cheers

Charcoal canister for capturing petrol vapours.

On most mk1's its no longer used by now (30 odd years later) since the emissions system components inevitably break and nobody replaces them....

Also, the black stuck stuck to the rain tray, is that sound deadening??? im assuming so, and what are the implications of removing it, apart from extra cabin noise???

probably none - but you might find rust holes under it

    thats what i thought.

I'll get some dry ice tomorow and get it out of there, just in case of rust, hoping there won't be much there, as the rest of the car is generally pretty well rust free.
    Cheers for answering
