Carburetors can be side draft or down draft - the float chamber is different between these configurations
Side draft is probably better as it has a direct airflow into the head - but needs a lot more space
Down draft will put the air flow through an elbow, this configuration uses less space but is taller
Both work really well for street cars
In Motorsport there would be a preference for side draft
But it's mostly fuel injection and ECU these days which is far superior to carburators
