    Webbers for a mk1 need help

    I was wondering what down draft webber would be best suited for a mk1.

    I am currently planning to run a 32/36 down draft webber on an adaptor to standard manifold.

    Would this help my 1.6 gls auto, have extractors also.

    Try and find a TS Passat manifold, they had twin throat carbies on them, would be heaps better than the standard mani.

    i agree with static - the standard manifold with adapter is a bit restrictive. you can run a 32/36 webber on passat TS manifold and that is basically a nice easy fit up and works very well. I have one i might be letting go of soonish, if you would like.

    it will certainly help you, performance wise, but there isn't HEAPS to be gained without changine the cam, or higher compression pistons, or something like that.

    certainly, my 1.6 manual with 5 speed box (3100 at 110km/h) pulls better that it used to on the standard 4 speed (4000@110).

    i have extractors, 2 inch exhaust, and was running 32/36. now running a 40mm DCOE sidedraft. better top end.

    Side draft if u can be lucky... My mate took his down draft in to a shop and ended up with a straight swap for a side draft 45 DCOE

    TS Manifolds are getting hard to find, but they are better than adaptor plates as webbers bolt up and sit better under the bonnet without the adaptor plate height.

    I think I have 2 TS manifolds at the back of the workshop,I'll have a look if anybody is interested?

    Yea I got one lying around if not.

    Since you've already got a 32/36, go with it IMO. It won't give you heaps of power but it'll have alot more kick till about 6K rpms. It's meant to be more of a sporty kinda set up, but nothing blistering, performance wise. Should keep you happy for a while, and it's an auto to, so bummer. i've got the same set up (except manual) and I think it's great (for now atleast) Pete Jones has a DGV on a 1.8 cordy motor, and loves it, nice tourqey little thing, he says.

    a side draft, ie DCOE would be awesom, as It'll give you as little more power & top end strength an with little trumpets on, the sound is amazing! truely one of a kind. I heard josh coming to at least a block away on the way to my place - and it wasn't exhaust noise - it was all induction!!! the sound truely is great.
    But the fuel encon, will suck more than a 32/36, and a DCOE is suited better to a bigger engine/higher hp, mainly based on the fact that it's a bigger carb!

    But yea, since you've got ur choice of DGV's already, stick with that, on a TS passat manifold, and get that cleaned up a bit before you pop it on, and it'll be good for 15 hp maybe. and a couple more with extractors, but I donno abou the auto effect on it all ...

    Cheers guys for all the help, Im not after a race car, just wondering is it worth the effort over putting the standard Solex back on.

    Im unsure what the Auto box will do but it seems a big job to change but ill see depends on cash flow and time around studies.

    Project is turning into alot more than first expected.

    Yep the DGV/DGAV is a good replacement for a stock solex. I'd consider it to be the stock carby they should of had in the first place.

    They can be economical if you drive mainly on the primary and go very well when you put your foot down and open up both barrels.

    They're not really a high performance option but they are good for a daily driver.

    The solex carbs have always had a few issues, particularly with their idle circuit. The weber is much easier to tune and seems to stay in tune a lot better than the solex.

    I had endless troubles with the original solex, nothing would get it to work right. I just bolted the Weber on and haven't touched it since.

    I changed the motor from clapped out 1600 to a low mileage MKIII 1800 and swapped the carby straight over without changing anything and it's as good as gold.

    I was intending to put a mono-motronic injection system into this car that I have left over from wrecking a Cordoba, but honestly the Weber works so damn well it doesn't seem worth the bother.
