Webber problems

Grrrr

I was driving home (car is all warmed up) and all of a sudden I've lost power. Pull over to the side of the road, and pop the hood. Couldn't find anything wrong. Got back in and she fired up first go and idled fine. Press the accellerator and the engine starts to die. So I got home on the idle going through the gears - it was a v-e-r-y long trip home.

Everything had been working fine, but now something is wrong with my 32/36 dual throat webber

I don't really understand how this thing operates, so any suggestions will have to come with a description of what I need to look for (sorry - I am a bit of a gumby when it comes to this webber)

First thing i would try is a blocked fuel filter, taking that you have one fitted.
The sympton you describe i have seen many times. Before you go searching through the carby/fuel system or engine, replace the fuel filter, its easy and cheap to do. Hope it helps

Hi JP...Alot of Weber carbys have a little fuel filter right where the the fuel line goes in. Its normally behind a big brass hexagon 'nut' looking thing (19mm I think). the little filter works inside out,so make sure its not blocked because looking out it from the outside it looks clean.. Many thanks for your suggestions. I had a look at the inline fuel filter and the weber fuel filter tonight (above the 19mm nut - spot on Bazz), but both are fine. Then I noticed that (what I think is) the vacuum advance tube had come off - so I reconnected this with no resulting change.

The engine still idles fine, but dies on application of the throttle. Very confusing

Is there anything else I can look at before I send the little Mk1 off to the doc?

sounds like a blocked main jet and/or accelerator pump jet.

take off the air filter and look into the main throat of the carbie (primary, not sec) and quickly operate the throttle linkage. the accelerator pump should spray lots of fuel into the throat of the carbie.

if you undo and remove the 4 bolts from the top of the carbie that hold the top on, you will be able to remove the top cover and float assembly (be careful to not lose any part of the float assembly - if your careful it should stay all together. in the base of the float chamber on the carbie throat side you will see 2 brass screw looking things (submerged in petrol). these are the primary and secondary mains. using a clean screwdriver, carefully remove each jet and check it for garbage stuck inside it. also check for debris in the fload chamber.

not sure if these have electric chokes but make sure there opening up correctly mabye a wire fell off and the choke would make it run rich and die.

Hi Aydan, checked the accelerator pump, and all is good there - but I haven't checked the mains yet.

Brenton, the choke is a manual set-up, but is not connected. I usually have a cuppa while she idles and warms up in the morning before I drive to work.

I will need to check these two things to see if they are good,or need attention.

If you pump the throttle and it tends to die, it's usually the pump, if it idles ok but when you apply the throttle it dies, does it tend to pick up when you floor it? if that's the case, i'd recommend checking the idle jets too.

Also, if you find the idle tends to vary, you may have a vacuum leak.

My Mk1 gets crap in the idles now and then, it's a real pain. It's got a 44 IDF on it, i haven't done much with the 32/36s, so i can't tell you where the idles are.

I've just dropped my car off to get a nasty webber problem fixed. The car slowly started losing power and idle, felt like it constantly was running out of petrol. Turns out the webber carby had come loose off the motor and air was getting in.. very weird sorta problem! Within a day I had to drive it with foot to the floor or stalled.

Leaking air can also cause major problems as swiss7 pointed out. It would be a valid point to check all your both of the manifold gaskets and check both the manifold and carburettor are both firmly inplace.

And after reading the origional post, it sounds as if you may be getting too much air in, so it may be a seal.
