My mate who would be painting the car was down over the weekend. He had a good look over it and said i wouldn't need to go bare metal as its the original paint, just a good sand back and primer it. We may be able to get around without painting the entire car, but i think i want to.

Has anyone used POR-15? was looking up last night on fixing pan rust and found lots of people praising the stuff. Any suggestions on the best methods??

Matt the US guys love this stuff its like there god have a look at the mk1 forum and see that they use this stuff like nothing. Seen people use the whole thing on the bottom of there cars to there wheel guards!

You may find you'll go back to bare metal in some spots, due to dents, scratches etc etc, and not in others.

Remember that if you paint certain parts only, unless your mate is real good, you'll be able to see the new and old paint, cause the old paint is 30 odd years old. So my advice, is to spray the whole thing, so it all looks the same. (as i've done)

Just a word of caution, if you do spray the whole thing, you'll need to at least 3 coats imo, that way you won't have bits of primer coming through on some corners. and near drips... 1 coat (exterior only) will be about 1.5 litres of acrylic paint.

I'm sure your paint mate will know most of this, but yea, just thought I'd mention it.

be prepare to pay at least $200 just for POR15 stuff. Just follow the product instruction, I used the cheapest brush and throw it away once it is used.
Every people highly recommended POR15, I'll see if it's true after a few years when I pull my carpet to check.

Goto bare metal if you are changing the colour, if its the same colour, a rub and paint will do.

Sticking with the same colour, i like it and think it will suit the old style feel i'm going for with the car.

Having second thoughts about deleting the upper side strips, i like the clean look without them but i think the car could look somewhat unfinished without them also.

if you keep them, either get custom all chrome ones or mke srue you have some real nice clean origional ones, imo

I would leave them on, but you shouldn't listen to anyone else - do what you think is best.

I think the Mk1 looks a bit plain without them, though

Finally got all the rubbery matting off the floors, it was all through the boot to ARGH!

Found some more rust along the way, all the seems where the wheel wells meet the firewall are rusted, oly one small spot on the passenger side is right through, the rest seems to only be on the one layer of metal. Atleast the boot and sparewheel well are rust free

Reckon im going to run without a backseat and maybe look at a half cage while im at it it has two doors for two people haha
