I've done a bit by hand, i was going to sand blast them to get the powder coat off but i stripped them chemically instead. I've used an orbital sander for most of it so far, need to grab some finer grit paper tomorrow only hit it with 400 so far. Will also have to do a bit of work on the lip as they have a bit of gutter rash.

i sanded mine just went finer and finer
get meguiars nxl all metal polish
100 x better than autosol
and alot longer lasting shine
The Mothers aluminium polish is pretty good too.
your car and mine are twins i'm gonna keep mine the original colour too. let me know how you decide to do the paint, maybe we can do it together for common gain!

Im trying to work out the colour of the car, it has no colour code sticker on it.
It is an aussie built car so i looked up the aussie colour charts for 76 and they have flipper blue which i think is correct. I spoke to my old man and he reckons it is that colour he had a beetle the same colour.
I believe that same colour changed to either miami blue or florida blue after they stopped making them here.
