    WA Peth - problems with Mk1 1993 CAB -FUEL PUMP

    After having had a pleasant six months using the '93 Cabby as a DD, the longest period yet, she has died with suspected fuel pump issues.

    Can anyone recommend a Perth place where they can do a good diagnosis and not sting for parts too much?

    Even better would be a mobile mech with Mk1 Golf experience.

    I have read that there are, believe it or not, 2 fuel pumps! (and also the relay to check out).

    There is apocryphal information that I may have contributed to the fault by having low fuel levels i.e. close to empty.
    Is this a known fault in the VW design?? Something the owners manual is silent about.

    Yeah, there is a lift pump in the tank accessable from the fuel sender hole. the connecting hose that joins the lift pump to the outlet pipe can perish and cause fuel starvation probs also. If you have been running low fuel levels it certainly wont help the longevity of either lift or main pump ( specially if the tank has any internal corrosion from sitting long periods ) probably true for any fuel injected vehicle IMO.

    The guy I previously used for my Kjet stuff retired last xmas.

    I can get pumps ex UK that are better than the Bosch units, however it'll mean waiting about 10 days. otherwise try locals or

    If it aint a MK 1 then it must be a donor car ??

    Thanks, if I have to replace the 2 pumps it will not be cheap. I guess if the lifter pump is stuffed then the main will be too.

    So I guess if I get 12v at the pump(s) it shows that the fuse/relay/wiring is good. That part is easy..

    I suppose then next check the fuel tank (lifter) pump works then under the wheel arch pump, which I am not looking forward to.

    Also if I am buggering around with the pumps a good time to flush the fuel tank for corrosion, as you mentioned.

    Have you any good tips for doing this job?
