    VIC RWC 1.8 engine in a MK1

    Hey guys,

Im currently restoring my 4 door mk1. Its got the original 1.6 in it and its pretty tired. Im pretty keen to swap it out for a newer 1.8 as the old ones blowing smoke.

I was wondering if anyone has got a roadworthy in Vic after swapping out the 1.6 to a newer 1.8? If so was it a massive pain to pass?

    Any insight would be great!

    cheers

    j

If the 1.8 came in that model and chassis, and you also use the appropriate emissions and braking and suspension it should be ok.
Then again they might not even notice...

Mine was no problem dude. It depends on who you get to roadworthy it. Some mechanics will want an engineers certificate, others won't even notice. The new engines look right at home in the mk1s and most people don't take a second look. I got my RWC from Boris at volkscare. Cannot recommend him enough, top bloke and reasonably priced

should be fine. upgrades lower than 300cc don't need to be engineered etc. All info will be on the vicroads website

There's a seat Cordoba and mk3 golf at pick a part wreckers in kilsyth both with engine codes adz I presume. If you are handy with tools you could pull one out in a couple of hours and it'll cost you around 150 I'm fairly sure

    Hey Browneye!

    Cheers for the tip!!

Awesome, an ADZ should bolt straight up to the the existing 4spd and mounts that are in there, well so Im told. Time to do some more reading on a ADZ conversion!

ADZ is awesome in a MK1.

Keep the flywheel and clutch. Swap over the MK1 Induction and ignition.

You might have to swap over the water pump to get the original pulley on, the later water pump pulleys have a different sized hole in the middle.

Exhaust and inlet manifolds bolt on.

There's a ~10mm hole in the back of the head that needs blocking off.
