anybody got a wreck i can cut the strut towers out of?

i need to get some travel into this thing.

i built some coil overs for it and it has ok dampers already, but the way its sitting, it has less than 2"s of travel.. lol.

i dont really wanna bother getting short stroke stuff, and i really dont see any down sides to having the towers higher, even if i were to get proper short stroke coil overs one day it would just mean i dont have to run them so bottomed out.

    im in qld btw.

I know there was a Mk1 Cabrio being wrecked at European Auto Wreckers at Northgate (rear ended-front looked OK).

Also the VW workshop near Salisbury Wrecking may have some idea where to source bits from.

I see you are in Qld. I am at Holland Park so if you need some bits let me know. Here's a link to some pics: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?ai...3&id=565323157

    Cheers

We've got a MK1 Golf in the garage which will be going to be crushed soon, so if you want anything (I mean anything) let me know.

jon, sounds like the type of thing im after. the only problem is, what im wanting to do is cut the strut tower out of the car, so i can re weld them back into mine a little higher (so i have a bit more travel with the standard stroke front inserts) the only problem is it will end up probably not being too mobile after that..

anyway if its an early car id be interested in the bumper bars, or even if the later type have been fitted, like whats on my car, as my front one is a bit tweeked.

also some mirrors and other little things. if you wanna PM me your phone number ill give you a call and maybe pop round.

also cheers for the other suggestions paul ill keep them in mind.

just looking to make it driveable with the 13s and to the stage where it would be able to be registered if the need arises.

I'm not sure I've you've looked on vortex, but there are plenty of guys in the US who do this mod, although that's just do make them even lower!

Welcome to the forum and I'd suggest you pop round to Jons place and check out the mk 1 he had. it was in pretty good nick bar a few bits and pieces!

yeah ive seen the mod before. i can do it without a donor tower but it wont be as neat.

basically the problem is, that with the 13s with the 175 50 tyres, even though that car doesnt look super low, it really is, and with normal length of travel strut inserts, they are just about bottomed out.

when the inserts are that far through their stroke, they dont work too good.. obviously im not ultra concerned with the handling, seeing as the LCA points to the moon.. but it looks like a pretty easy mod' to me, and there are usually a fair few junky golfs around that are past their use by date.

i also searched the entire monroe usa catalog (great resource), and there isnt really any insert, or even replacement leg out there thats any shorter than whats in a golf. so the only way to get some travel, with out buying an off the shelf coil over, which is already shorter in the body and stroke. is to either move the bracket higher on the casing, or raise the towers. i would prefer the first option, but there isnt really much room till it would hit the drive shaft.

if i set the car up like that, it also means i can just use a decent insert(like a GAZ, or maybe a re-valved Koni), with a little shorter stroke, and it will be set up perfectly (not sure if i mentioned, i already modified the standard strut casing to coil over).
