looking good pete. you'll have to tell us how it handles with the GTi bar fitted![]()
This mornings suspension upgrade to Red. Front end to follow soon.
It's sitting up a bit high at the moment but it will settle.
King springs, Gabriel Gas shocks and GTI Rear Bar all off e-bay of course, it's where the truly classy people shop!
Brakes also to follow - Brand new front discs, and Seat Cordoba rear drums (from e-bay ) and a 22mm master cyl and MkIII booster from Valver.
(This is a daily driver folks, Save the ultimate suspension comments for the track thanks.) Parts were chosen for economy and availability. They're better than stock and 30 years newer!
Enjoy!
GTI Rear Bar
New shocks and springs.
Installed.
Ride Height, Front is still stock diesel springs which has always sat up high, will change over in the next day or so.

Progress Pics of front end work. I'll leave the brakes 'till after I've modified the booster that's coming from Valver. So todays work will be front struts and sway bar on Red.
Here's the before shots
They're silver 'cos they got a 10 second spray paint detail before day of the VW.
Better add some rack boots to the shopping list!
Note the early design of these calipers - there's nothing to stop the front pad spinning away except the pins through the top of the pad. I usually find that this style wears the pads unevenly too, they sort of end up tapered. I guess that's because they don't distribute pressure evenly across the face of the pad. As far as I know these are standard 1979 diesel brakes.

Pulled apart.
These things never give up without a fight. Couldn't get it to budge no matter what I did. (Except this!)

Bugger! The upper spring seats are too small for the new springs!
The spings in the car have a small coil at the top. The new springs have a constant (larger Diameter).
My other car of the same year had the big seats.
I don't s'pose anyone has a pair I could grab today?
Otherwise I'll have to pop the old springs back in.
Might go for a quick blast to the wreckers!
Wish me luck!
Pete
