ok so attempted to start car today, no go. just some poping and farting. and little pop out carb.

I have crank lined up with 0 degree mark on flywheel and the front pulley notch is lined up with the Itermediate shaft. so im guessing thats right.

i moved crank over a tad to point towards the 6degess BTDC diamond, and set dizzy to face lead 1.

What i wanna know is, which way around does the cam wheel go? there is a line, and a Dot. which side goes where? ive got it line facing gearbox end, and the dot faces away from engine.

Also i think i got leads right way, 1 3 4 2 in clock wise direction yes?

    Cheers

Line on cam wheel inside. Is level with top of cyl head.
Dot on outside at 12 o clock on wheel.

Dissy rotor should point at the nearest corner of the block by the geatbox when at tdc. Thus, that lead is no 1. then 1342 yes.

Sparks, fuel and air and it will go.

    hey mate,

the camshaft pulley shouldnt go on the wrong way - its keyed and on a taper. you have described it correctly.

still sounds as though you have something wrong though, since you've got some backfiring and not running.

    heres what i do:

    - ensure crank at TDC
    - remove camshaft cover, and ensure cam lobes over cylinder number 1 are both pointing sky high - ie - the cylinder is about to fire - top of compression stroke. this is really important! also note that cylinder 4 will have both lobes touching or almost touching the cam followers, indicating its about to begin to open the inlet valve.
    - once the crank and cam are in hte correct positions as above, only then point your dizzy at number 1 lead.
    - tighten up the tensioner and turn over the engine to ensure you arent way off and going to have piston/valve contact

hope that helps. its almost always worth having the cam cover off to check. set it by logic, then you will usually find that the timing marks are almost in the right positions, and you can use them to get it just right. dont be too fussed about getting the intermediate shaft/crank timing correct - this is more a luxury than necessity. as long as the dizzy finishes up in a place where you can have some timing adjustment, you will be OK.

    good luck

well i got the intermediate shaft near perfectly lined with crank pulley, so happy there.
think i may have put leads on wrong, think i had them anticlock wise so 1 2 4 3 i think if reading clockwise.

pretty sure i got the TDC right, read the lobes on the piston one, they should make bunny ears lol.

also if i had flywheel on wrong way, surely the crank pulley notch would be way off? seeing as the pulley only goes on one way.

Eitherway cheers you two, ill go fiddle tomorrow, super keen to go for a blast

Clockwise from No1 which is the one nearest the block

Clutch and flywheel only goes on one way.

Take No1 plug out and look in the top. When you see the piston at the top, your bottom end marks should be at TDC.

well tried leads on right way,
cam and crank timing look spot on.
and Loon, when notch on cam lined up with cover, the dot sits at 9o'clock
tried advancing the timing, any more and plug 1 will become a different one.

I did get some pops out of it, then it started and ran for 2seconds, in that 2 seconds there was alot of rattle noises from in engine :S

If it were me, i'd be adjusting the dissy, till it fired and ran,.

I was able to run and drive an old 1.6 with the timing that far out it wasn't even funny.

My goodness, what an ordeal. I hate it when that happens to me - a job that looks straight forward gets hung up on one detail – it usually has me feel sick and racking my brains to work it out – round and round over the same thing. Good luck and keep going.

If its any consolation - when I first got my car I fitted a new cam belt. 6 years later when I replaced it I found that it had been one tooth out all that time - boy it runs smoothly now!
