I tried it with my GTI chassis # & it doesn't tell you much other than it's a Mk1 Golf.
Funny about that!
With the right decoder it tells you the country of manufacture, year of build and chassis type but not a lot else. The sticker in the boot is of more interest as that has the option codes on it.
Stuff I know for sure MK1s with 17E in the number are classed as being Campaigns, the runout GTIs. They all had sunroofs, foglight grilles, tinted windows, Pirelli wheels.
The part number of parts is a better example of the use of the numbers.
Items beginning 171 came from MK1s, 172 were MK1 Cabs, 191 bits are MK2, 1H MK3, 1J MK4, 32 and 35 are Passats as is 3B. 53 is Corrado. 6N is Polo 4 and the list goes on.
It is not uncommon to find MK1 part numbers on ETKA for items fitted to other Chassis. I use ETKA quite a bit for seeing what other dubs you can get bits from.
