The radiator cap will cause them to run hot very quickly and will cause coolant loss. Less than $20, its not a bad place to start.
The temp gauges on different Mk1s run in different ranges. The only way to see how hot it is getting is to stick a temperature gauge in the radiator when the car is idling at standstill.
    Good luck, Andrew

As Andrew said, alot of them all read different.

I've had several mk1's & some of them had normal reading's at 1/4 getting upto 3/4 before the thermo cutting. Some have stayed at half the whole time, & my gti's normal reading's are 1/4 to half before the thermo cut's in.

The cap is a good place to start.

Maybe also check your thermostat & waterpump housing for leak's. Another place that is over looked is your heater core. Can leak without knowing.

What's the oil like under the oil cap? Milky?
