So after 4 weeks with the mechanic, the 16v is home and running better than ever. A pretty long list of fixes but all essential.
It is amazing what was causing some of the issues. The most noise from the engine bay was from a collapsed bearing in the alternator, now it's as quiet as a mk3 in there!
Replaced;
- fuel tank (screw holed in bottom and silastic was smeared over it. Cracked on top side, now it does not smell like a service station)
- relocated fuel pump
- new fuel rail and pressure reg, injector seals
- new accelerator cable bracket
- new AFM bracket
- replaced throttle body and flexible hosings
- new starter
- reco alternator
- new rear brake lining and wheel bearings
- CV boot
- replace ECU
Along with a few other minor bits and bobs.
It is amazingly smooth and rapid, and has a much improved exhaust note now it's properly tuned.
good to hear nothing better than a properly sorted mk 1!

Congrats Mick. Sounds well sorted. That was quite a list.
I hear it hauls now.
