    Swapping parts from MK2 to MK1

    The more I look at everyone's MK1's on this forum the more I'm tempted to get one and swap the mechanicals out of my MK2 GTI.

    I know I can use the engine and gearbox, dash, wheels, wiring loom and brakes but what about other things like brake booster, front seats etc?

    Brake booster can go in. A well documented mod, look for 22mm master cylinder references in google. I have fitted even bigger servos but the brakes become really twitchy. Some replumbing of brake light switches and pipe work may be needed.

    The seats should go in too IIRC. Something else that has been done lots in Europe. I had to modify Scirocco seats to fit my MK1 years ago to get the hight adjustment feature. The centre rail on them was a different width. I cut the one from the MK1 GTI seats and welded it in.

    Mk2 is a better car by miles.
    Mk1 Brakes are nonsence and Mk2 parts do not help the front of a Mk1.
    Plus all Mk1s are full of rust and dont have a removeable subframe.
    Mk2s are much easier to modify and get later parts to fit.
    Put a proper engine in your Mk2 and it will be 100 times better than a mouldy old Mk1.

    It'd still be 5x uglier though!

    As much as i love my mk1, i still agree with Matt. The amount of trouble you'll go through to change parts around, then you'll run into more problems etc. mk1's just take all your money LOL, well mine does anyway

    However mk1 does look better.. ahaha

    going to a mk2 from a mk1 is a downgrade

    front seats go in, tried it this afternoon with the cabby & the mk 2.

    I'd keep the mk 2 Paul. much more refined, which i think is more important given you do lots and lots of miles!

    maybe just a mk 1 for the weekends?

    I've had a few MK1's including a 81 GTI, a 2 door 2 tone (silver and black) 79 GLS and a black 79 GLS 4 door with a full bodykit, 1.8 and 5 speed.

    I really miss the fun that only a MK1 can give you. And they look hot!

    it'll depend on the condition of the mk2 if it was a bit tatty then yeah strip it for parts otherwise sell it or keep it as is thats the smart thing to do. If your dumb like me and i had a mk2 laying around it would be stripped no question! or any other model for that matter to support my mk1 habit

    I reckon my old Mk2 2 door was twice the car of any of my Mk1's.
    Was a great handler, refined, rust free, and went very nicely with the 2E motor.
    Par 6 Golf GTI. Coilovers, BBS CH Wheels, APR'd
