aydan and I coordinated a day off yesterday to get stuck into the car.

I wired up the glow plugs and made an adapter for the alternator.

The glow plug relay worked first try.

I used a standard glow plug relay (from german auto parts) with a 5AG fuse block with a 50A fuse. I replaced the old earth straps with nice fat new ones.

We also plumbed up the water hoses, using a mk1 sealed radiator with the mk3 expansion tank. Also had to replace the newer water outlet in the side of the head with an old mk1 outlet to use the old temp senders.

We left the intercooler for later, and plugged the turbo outlet straight into the inlet manifold so we could get it running.

We had to modify the gear linkage to clear the brake booster. Aydan welded and redrilled the linkage so that it sat a bit lower, also gives me a bit more throw with the gearstick. thanks also to my $50 14mm drill bit.

aydan drained to fuel out (petrol), and put in 20L of biodiesel. He installed my diesel fuel filter from my old passat and all new hoses.

New motor and gearbox oil. Filled it up with water.

It got to 7:17pm and we gave it its first crank.. no horrible valve smashing noises, so we know we at least got that right!!

sadly, with a low battery, and a deadline of 7:30pm, we had to pack up and leave it for later...

cant wait til it makes noises (and lots of engine bay smoke as it has no exhaust) !!!

    mike

PS: to anyone considering/budgeting for a project car, make sure you leave plenty of cash for the end of the project when you have to buy a million little bits and pieces (hose clamps, new oil, bolts, wire, etc.), cos it all adds up!!
