MK1 - that started it all
MK5 - for bringing the GTI back and that fantastic appearance
MK2 gets my vote too. It's old enough to be a classic (and not have a bloody computer telling you what to do and how to drive) and it makes a great daily driver.
I might change my mind when I get the MK1 back on the road. Depends if I can get it to ride as soft as I used to set them up while still able to out-corner a go-cart driven by Mark Webber. Trouble is, the best handling MK1 I had was 30 years ago and I can't remember how rough it was driving on country roads. Maybe I've changed and my standards have risen because all modern cars ride so well now.

It also depend on your age too, if you are young (like mid 30) you'll be die hard with Mk1 raw feeling. I'm close to 60 so want a little bit more 'modern' although Mk2 is no way a modern car. That's a reason I went to E30still not modern but good enough

You sure about that age thing? I'm older than you but still love the raw feel that a MK1 has. My teenage kids hated my MK2 and aren't too happy I bought a Seat Cupra because it's much stiffer than my wife's standard Holden Cruse.
