    Stiffened Rubber Mounts

    Hi all!

I am currently running my 3 forward engine mounts as prothane and the rear gearbox mount as a rubber diesel mount. I was wondering if anyone knew of any mounts that are stiffer than the standard ones but not as rigid as the prothane ones. The theory of the prothane mounts is great but I think the benefits are overrated.

As I mentioned, my rear gearbox mount comes off a diesel Mk1 Golf and is supposed to be slightly stiffer than the petrol version and I much prefer it over the rear prothane mount in regards to vibrations through the body! Anyways, any ideas as to where different stages of mount can be purchased for the mk1 as can be done for the later golfs?

    Any advice much appreciated,
    Tom.

My Dad has a Mk1 track car with 16v and has no problem with the diesel uprated mounts and has no problems. IS it maybe the car is driven in traffic with lots of start stops?

Don't know the exact engine mount setup on a MK1, but with certain MK2 engine mounts you can get Polyurethane inserts/stiff-ners.
    Like these actually,

Yep these hardened rubber mounts seems like the go. They could be the standard diesel ones?

Definitely the best way to go.

I think Seb (Bug Racer) is importing TT now?

Not sure if you have resolved this yet, but I can tell you right now if you want to get rid of nearly all of the harshness from those red poly mounts, just pull out the inserts from the drivers and passenger side mounts - the 2 round mounts. Leave the front and rear poly mounts there. These 2 inserts are where nearly all of this harshness comes from with these cheap red poly mounts. I just got back from a test drive where i removed those red inserts and what a difference.

To give you an indication of how much difference particularly the drivers insert makes - I was not even running the whole insert, I had cut off the very top insert piece and that was all that was inserted into the drivers side rubber mount. The difference with just that piece gone is really significant. If you do this you might want to fill all the holes in the rubber mount with sikaflex and let it cure just to increase the longevity, and make them a little bit more rigid. Anyway there is a possible solution and its free.

Sounds like a good idea mate but I ended up installing the HD rubber mounts so will have to see how they go. Thanks for the reply.
