    Clean the idle jet.

    Check the idle solenoid.

    Agreed

While you're at it, also check all vacuum hoses and PCV valve.

Check the rubber mounting block. They crack and let in air.
!.6 carbies were below average and have always given trouble since new.
Read a workshop memo from VW back in the 70s re carbies stalling stating that even the factory couldn't rectify the problem and later changed to a different carbie or F/inj.
Some have a solenoid on the pilot jet so check that one as well
    Good luck

it seem a little more drastic that idle managment as as soon as i let the revs drop the engine stalls even when down shifting.i ran out of petrol last week, could this have an effect eg crap from the bottom of the tank in the lines or the pump??? thanks for all the help

Cut off solenoid by the sounds of it.
Could be a blown fuse ,check that you have power to the solenoid.and check the earth too.
Its the cylindrical thingy on the passenger side of the carby with a wire running to it.

Its always the damn solenoid, or the wire. Just cut the end of the solenoid off, or put a bolt in. To stop overrun give it a rev as you turn it off.
I hate those carbies, they are cr*p. What about your twinnies?
