Here's the aftermath. The cylinder doesn't look damaged....i mean no chips or scratches and i cant see and scratches on the cylinder wall, the car starts and revs fine so i guess there is no serious damage. It was only a very thin washer made from soft-ish metal. The ***** thing is that its still leaking around the manifold, the crap i was given at autobahn just melted away back to liquid. I bought all of the gaskets off ebay so we will wait and see how we go with thous.
Good news is that all the gears go in nice and smooth but the bad news is that i am going to need a lot of dynamat and a 2nd muffler because it sounds like a race car.

Here is the spark plug, a normal washer and the one i pulled out.

Here are some other pics taken with my dads phone.

A pic of the old set up with the old carbie

Pics of the engine now, the bay needs a wash and a hand polish to get the over-spray off and the cables need to be cleaned up, ill also be getting some proper spark plug leads and try to hide them as best as i can......don't even mention the uglyness of the rain tray. Eventually it will look a fair bit better than what it does now.

Oh heres the volt meter and switches in and working

    man i hate that!!

I had just spent 2 weeks putting same sorta engine in my golf (1.8l, weber, extractors, cam ect)
Got it running finally and was so happy as it was first swap in golf, 15 mins later a hard washer from the bolt that holds weber filter base down feel into the second side of weber, soon as i hammered the throttle washer feel in and made a mess

    Glad yours is ok though!!

Great work Spyda, you're doing the old girl proud!

Are you still experiencing the manifold leak with the weber? If so here are a few options:
    1. Check out if you can get the gasket from a weber distributor
    2. Specialised Gaskets P/L in Clayton seem to sell gasket materials, this might be an option
    3. the manifold and/or the carby might be warped and need to be machined slightly

The Motorcraft carby you had (I think) is a knock-off of a Holley Carby used by Ford. Had one and it gave me no end of grief. OnceI got the weber, it was a treat to drive. The car went like a scalded cat and when I was on the highway it used less fuel that the old Solex single throat.

Keep up the great work and I hope to see you on the road soon.

    Cheers

Thanks for the advise mate, ill see how i go with the gaskets i got off ebay.
Im realy hoping its not warped.

The carbie that is on there now is a 32/36 but it is stamped as motocraft, looks like a webber and ive been told it the same thing.

As far as i can tell it over fueling, the spark plugs come out black and it sometimes continues running for a few seconds when you switch it off, im hoping its because of the leak. I was told it was recently re-jeted to suit a 1.8.

I know dude, i know....but the sterio needs to be heard too. I really didn't expect it to be so loud inside.

I know you've set the timing a bizzilion times, but I'm have a feeling this happens when the timing is wrong...?

    anyone else confirm?

your probly right man, ive only set it to the timing marks on the cam, crank and dizzy, i havnt used a timing gun or advanced it the 6 degrees or whatever it is.

well you can always try rotating the dizzy a bit then, make sure you do it when it's warm though.

There's a spot where a golf can idle and run pretty well, but it's way advanced (IIRC) from the correct timing mark.

best bet would be to get a timing gun onto it.
