Speakers in Mk 1 ? Where?

My daughter wants a CD player and some speakers installed in the Golf for Christmas. I really dig the period tape player but she doesn't We have tried the iPod tuner but its a bit dodgy. So my question is - where do the speakers go?

It has these in the doors - where else could I put decent speakers without cutting into anything? I like to keep things original if I can.

Ooops... I put this in the wrong spot, didn't I? sorry mods.

You can always replace those speakers in the doors, they look like a 4" speaker. Without cutting into anything your only other option is to have some speakers in boxes in the boot.

The CD player should fit into the original hole in the dash just fine.

If you have this kind of parcel shelf support, you can run a 6x4" rear speaker

you could just put new 4" speakers in the front or have 6" speakers in the same hole as where your 4" speakers are, yes i had to do a little cutting but only to the door card which isnt that hard. you do have to buy the right ones however with a smaller speaker surround so as your nuckles dont always hit them. i have made a small thin neat looking box that sits on my parcel shelf with 6x9 speakers in it, i have tried them in the boot but it just muffled the sound. good luck with it

p.s i would be the first to put my hand up for the original head unit if u get rid of it

The shelf supports I have at the moment are covered in the blue carpet that matches the parcel tray, I think they are original. It doesnt have the little holes. Would I be able to pick up a pair of supports like the ones in the photo?

I should also say the front little square speakers are Clarions so they might still be OK - maybe if I put a CD player in and check them first, they might just stay.

Lawny - I am pretty sure it still has the handbook.

bahh! those ipod docking stations are rubbish! you need one of those tape's with the headphone cables out of it, heaps clearer and no static, as long as your tape player works, itll work just fine, all youll have to do is upgrade the speakers

Thanks guys. Are those tape thingos really OK? I might have to pull out one of my old cassette tapes and check if it works first before I buy one.
